Museum Internships

William B. Jordan Undergraduate Internships 2007-08

Program Description

William B. Jordan Undergraduate Internships at the Meadows Museum offer students an introduction to the practical and theoretical issues that shape museum professions today. Three internships for the 2008–09 academic year are available; one internship is available in each of the following Museum divisions: education, curatorial, and exhibitions/registrar. These competitive internships provide students the opportunity to work directly with the Meadows Museum's staff and world-renowned collection of Spanish art. Experience gained as a Jordan Intern will provide a foundation for future positions in a variety of contexts, including museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions. To be considered, applicants must submit an application form, personal statement, and a letter of recommendation from a professor or
academic associate to Scott Winterrowd, Assistant Curator of Education.
  • The Jordan internship is a year-long professional internship for credit only. Students enroll for 1 credit hour in the fall and 2 credit hours in the spring. Upon successful completion of the internship (both semesters), a grade of “pass” for a total of 3 credit hours is granted.

  • The Museum will accommodate up to three interns annually, one for each division:

    Curatorial
    Education
    Exhibitions

  • SMU students may apply and interview for an internship in a specific Museum division, and each division is responsible for awarding its own internship. Preference will be given to upper classmen with a relevant major.

  • The Jordan intern will review and sign a contract, along with a faculty advisor (through whom the credits are granted), and a Museum supervisor. The faculty advisor may also require a learning contract specific to her/his division.

    Required Hours

  • The Jordan intern is asked to commit 10 hours per week per semester (150 hours/15 weeks), and must provide to her/his Museum supervisor and faculty advisor a set work schedule a the beginning of her/his appointment. S/he will work during regular Museum hours, Monday through Friday.

  • In order to earn a passing grade, the Jordan intern must comply with all Museum policies and procedures and complete all internship hours during the semester s/he enrolled in the program.

    Responsibilities

  • Jordan intern projects will be determined by respective Museum supervisors and reported by the intern to the faculty advisor on a weekly basis.

  • As determined by their respective Museum supervisors, all interns will give at least one gallery talk, museum tour, or presentation during their internship to which their faculty advisors are invited.

  • The Jordan intern will participate in weekly meetings with Museum supervisors and other Jordan interns. Faculty advisors are invited to attend these meetings.

  • The Jordan intern will serve on the Museum’s Student Guild Advisory Council, providing leadership for other university student volunteers.

  • The Jordan intern will keep a weekly journal detailing activities and projects performed during the week. These short entries (no more than 200 words) should include reflections about the Museum experience: what s/he learned, questions, concerns, connections to other academic or professional experiences, etc.

    Grading

  • The Jordan Intern will be assigned a “Pass” or “Fail” grade by her/his faculty advisor, based on feedback from the Museum supervisor.
Summer Internships for Undergraduate and Graduate Students

Internships at the Meadows Museum offer students an introduction to the practical and theoretical issues that shape museum professions today. Summer Internships are available in various divisions of the museum, in which students will work under supervision of the Meadows Museum's staff. Experience gained as an intern will provide a foundation for future positions in a variety of contexts, including museums, galleries, and other cultural institutions.

Interns are asked to commit approximately 10 hours per week to the museum and will determine a weekly schedule with their supervisors. These internships are unpaid and will last approximately ten weeks during the summer months.

Every effort will be made to match each intern to the position appropriate to his or her individual skills and interests. Meadows Museum Summer Internships are open to undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university; preference will be given to upper-level students with majors or minors in Art History or Studio Art and with an interest in museum work. Applications are now being accepted for summer 2008; application forms are available at the Meadows Museum Education Office or are available to download here.
